Multi-factor authentication is an extra layer of security designed to ensure that you're the only person who can access your accounts, even if your password is stolen.
Microsoft Authenticator
Effective August 31, 2026, the President's Office will be using Microsoft Authenticator to enhance our security infrastructure and streamline our authentication processes.
Transition Timeline
- Now through August 4, 2026: Download Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device (iOS or Android) as soon as possible on your mobile device. Use the following Knowledge articles for your particular device:
- August 5, 2026: You will see a prompt to register Microsoft Authenticator upon your next attempt to log into a UMPO protected service, i.e., Zoom, Outlook, etc.
- August 31, 2026: DUO will be discontinued; all staff migrates to Microsoft Authenticator
Duo
Duo is still required until you have successfully transitioned to Microsoft Authenticator. Also, you may be using Duo for multi-factor authentication for services that do not involve UMass.
Do not delete Duo until you have successfully transitioned to Microsoft Authenticator, or if you are using Duo for other purposes.

Why are we making this change?

- Enhanced security features and attack resistance
- Streamlined user experience with fewer applications to manage
- Improved support and maintenance from our IT team
