Session Description

The session on Factors that Impact Compensation; Key laws, policies, and guidelines (HR), led by John Roy, covers essential regulations and policies affecting compensation decisions. It includes but is not limited to the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for overtime eligibility and the UMPO Guidelines for a Successful Search to ensure diverse candidate pools. Additionally, the Massachusetts Pay Transparency Act (MPTA) mandates pay range disclosures, and the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act (MEPA) prohibits gender-based wage discrimination unless specific criteria are met.

Speaker Bio

John Roy

A medium-light skinned with brown hair and a brown mustache.John Roy serves as the Director of Compensation for the UMass President's Office. He has worked for the President's Office since October 2018. His prior positions include:

  • Director of Compensation for the Chan Medical School since January 2006.
  • Over 20 years as a Compensation Professional in the High Technology Industry with corporations such as EMC, Data General, Digital Equipment,
  • Compensation Specialist for the City of Waltham.

John holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Vermont and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

John serves on the Executive Compensation and Benefits Advisory Committee of the College and University Professional Association (CUPA) and is a long-time member of the World At Work (WAW) Total Rewards Association.
