The 2022 International Women's Day event at the UMass President's Office took place virtually on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

Welcome

9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Join us as Nick Jain from UITS kicks off the day with a welcome, followed by music, an inspirational video, and a fun Kahoot game.

The music will be Dolly Parton's “A Woman’s Right, " in which she tackles gender equality. She wrote and recorded it as a contribution for an all-star album dedicated to educating Americans on the constitutional amendments. We’ll hear Parton's jubilant anthem about the suffrage movement of the early 20th century. The lyrics ring true to the blue-collar roots that her country music heritage knows so well. Although the song was inspired by how the 19th amendment provided women with the right to vote, it's more universally applicable, too: “They said a woman’s place / Was staying in her hut / Washin’, cookin’, cleanin’ / Wipin’ babies' butts," Parton sings. "They said she’d never see the day / We’d equal up to them / But here we are / We’ve come so far / I guess we sure showed them.”

Ted Talks

How to reduce bias in your workplace - The Way We Work

We all have bias, especially the unconscious kind. And it’s preventing us from doing our best work. Gone unchecked, bias can make employees feel resentful, frustrated and silenced, and it can even lead to outright discrimination and harassment. These are the 3 ways to reduce bias at work, according to Just Work co-founders, author Kim Scott and CEO Trier Bryant. The Way We Work is a TED original video series where leaders and thinkers offer practical wisdom and insight into how we can adapt and thrive amid changing workplace conventions.

The Likability Dilemma for Women Leaders- by Robin Hauser

A revealing talk about implicit biases forcing an honest look at how both genders often perceive successful women and their “likability.” Robin is an award-winning director of documentary films at Finish Line Features. Robin's most recent documentary, $avvy, (2021) contemplates the historical, cultural and societal norms around women and money and explores why it's critical for women to take an active role in managing personal finance.
