The National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), a premier professional organization in the field of higher education law, recently met at its annual conference in Chicago to discuss important and current legal topics and developments impacting institutes of higher education. Attorneys Maria Sheehy and Alyssa Cherubino represented the Office of the General Counsel at the conference.

The NACUA conference this year was particularly significant as it coincided with the release of three major Supreme Court decisions concerning affirmative action, federal student loans, and the definition of constitutionally protected free speech. Erwin Chemerinsky, an esteemed constitutional law scholar and Dean of the University of California Berkley Law, kicked off the conference with an update on the Supreme Court’s current term and predictions for the following term. The conference also offered attendees the opportunity to attend break-out sessions featuring leading legal authorities on a wide variety of topics, including, equitable pay laws, immigration law, legal issues impacting college athletics, Clery Act compliance, student conduct issues, campus free speech and social media policies, research misconduct, crisis leadership, and alternative dispute resolution. NACUA’s annual conference was attended by 1756 college and university attorneys from across the country.
