Date/Time:
Autistic Pride Day has been recognized internationally by the Autistic community since 2005. Autistic pride recognizes the importance of pride for autistic people and its role in bringing about positive changes in the broader society. The day focuses on reshaping the negative and inaccurate messaging that is often conveyed by non-autistic people - the myth that autistic people are broken and that autism needs to be cured. Autism is not a disease - it is just another way of being and thinking.
"Autistic Pride Day is all about celebrating our unique identity and the diversity of the human experience. Let’s embrace our differences, promote understanding, and make the world a more accepting and inclusive place for everyone." (Source: Autistic Pride Day Website).
Anyone can be an ally to the Autistic community and support Autistic Pride both on June 18 and on any day of the year. The Autistic Pride Day site provides an Allyship resource page with key tips on how to be an ally, the first being to educate yourself and go beyond the biases that society (media, movies, etc.) conveys about Autistic people and all neurodivergent people. Seek out actual authentic autistic stories. There are plenty of books, articles, podcasts, and more. We include some recommended resources on our Neurodivergence page.
