About Transgender Awareness Week
Transgender Awareness Week occurs November 13-19 each year and culminates on the November 20 Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Transgender Awareness Week provides awareness about transgender people and illuminates issues that face the transgender community – in particular, discrimination, prejudice, and violence.
The term “transgender” or “trans” is an umbrella term for a person whose gender identity is not the same as the sex they were assigned at birth. “Trans” may also include non-binary people – those who do not identify exclusively as a man or a woman.

About Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20, 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which was originally established to commemorate the life of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was murdered in her Boston apartment in 1998. TDOR is now an annual day of remembrance for members of the transgender community who have been victims of anti-transgender hatred and violence.
