World Mental Health Day has been recognized all over the world since 1992, because of a worldwide advocacy and awareness program started by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). The core mission of WFMH revolves around fostering a greater global understanding of mental health, working proactively to prevent the onset of mental disorders, and advocating for meaningful changes while championing recovery-oriented approaches.

As we recognize World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, there is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind this year’s theme “Mental health is a universal human right.” Let’s make mental health a priority and stand united to raise awareness about the importance of mental health as an indispensable universal human right, with the vision of fostering a world that values and nurtures the well-being of all.

Ways to Participate in Mental Health Awareness Today and Beyond

Complete the “Be There Certificate”

Co-created by Born this Way Foundation (an organization established by Lady Gaga and her mother) and Jack.org, the Be There Certificate is a free, self-paced learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy and provide you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to safely support anyone who may be struggling with their mental health. While geared towards youth, this certification provides anyone with a deep understanding of Be There’s 5 Golden Rules — a simple but actionable framework teaching people how to recognize when someone might be struggling with their mental health, their role in supporting that person, and how to connect them to the help they need.
