Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tsp of caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup of milk

Instructions:

  • Boil raisins in water for 7 minutes to soften.
  • Strain in colander and toss in 2 tablespoons of flour to coat.  
  • Mix remainder of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 tsp of salt and 3 tsp of baking powder. 
  • Cut butter into small pieces and add butter, raisins and caraway seeds to dry mix.
  • In a separate small bowl beat 1 egg with a fork and add ¾ cup of milk. Pour over dry ingredients and mix briefly.  
  • If mix is too dry, add a splash more milk. 
  • Place mixture into a greased (with butter!) loaf pan and bake at 350 for an hour. 
  • Check with a toothpick to make sure it’s done at the hour.

Personal Story

After my grandparents immigrated, my grandmother would make Irish Bread every Sunday for the family to have after church. All of my aunts and uncles would gather around the table debating politics over her Irish bread. My grandparents spoke Gaelic at home.
