Western Christian Churches observe a 40-day season of Lent with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. Catholics from age 18 to 59 are required to fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent, unless exempt due to a medical reason. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
