October was first designated as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in the 1980s and has been recognized ever since. More than 400,000 people are living with Down syndrome in the United States. There is no known way to prevent Down syndrome during pregnancy and it occurs in both sexes and across socioeconomic classes. The purpose of Down Syndrome Awareness Month is to advocate for acceptance and inclusion and raise public awareness for Down syndrome.
