Coast Guard Birthday

The Coast Guard was established on August 4, 1790, when Congress gave Alexander Hamilton approval to construct ten vessels. The Coast Guard was the only maritime military until the Navy was established and focused at the time on preventing smuggling and enforcing tariff laws.
