Cape Verdean Independence Day celebrates July 5, 1975, the day in which Cape Verde officially declared its independence from Portugal. Based on a 2019 Boston Planning and Development Report, there are approximately 65,000 Cape Verdeans that live in Massachusetts, primarily in Boston, Brockton, Taunton, and New Bedford. Historically, one of the major factors that brought Cape Verdeans to Massachusetts was the whaling industry.
Annual celebrations are held by the Cape Verdean Association of Boston and the New Bedford Cape Verdean Recognition Committee, Inc.
