The United States Navy was established on October 13, 1775, as an effort to curb British control of the seas. When the Navy was first established, it consisted of only two armed vessels. Since then, the United States Navy has become one of the largest Navies in the world.
The Navy’s birthday was officially recognized in 1972 by Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt. Since 1972, there have been Navy-wide celebrations. Starting in January 2025, the Navy kicked off plans to celebrate its 250th year through commemorative events, community engagement, and other celebrations.
Philadelphia is hosting the 250th Birthday Celebration from October 9 through October 15 and will honor both the Navy and the Maine Corps, who are also celebrating 250 years in November.
Here are a few of the recommended ways the Navy has identified to celebrate its 250th birthday:
- Share Your Navy Story on social media using #Navy250. Your story can be a family member’s service, a memorable visit to a Navy ship, or your own experience in the Navy.
- Engage with Navy Personnel. Reach out to local Navy installations or Reserve units to invite sailors to speak at a community or work event.
- Attend a Commemorative Event. Check the Navy’s official calendar for events happening near you.
- Fly the Flag. Display either the American flag or Navy flag outside your home.
As noted in the first way to celebrate, you can visit your local navy yard if they have a museum or tours. The Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston has built, repaired, modernized, and resupplied ships for 174 years. They have tours of the USS Constitution and USS Cassin Young and provide free admission to the USS Constitution Museum.
