About Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year is celebrated across the world on the first new moon of the calendar. Lunar New Year is based off the lunar or lunisolar calendars. Celebration customs and duration differ across many cultures who celebrate the Lunar New Year. Some traditions can include putting up decorations, eating dinner with family and loved ones, giving red envelopes and other gifts, firecrackers and fireworks, and watching or participating in lion and dragon dances.
The Lunar New Year also signifies the transition to a new year of the zodiac, a traditional classification of the calendar that assigns an animal and its attributes to each year in a repeating twelve-year cycle. The animals are often the same across different Asian countries, including China, South Korea, North Korea, Cambodia, and Singapore. 2024 will be the year of the Dragon for most, or the year of the Naga in Thailand! We also recognize that many Southeast Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders do not observe the Lunar zodiac.
