About Pride Month
Each June, Pride Month is celebrated to honor the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) community, culture, achievements, and to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. Pride Month celebrates all who have contributed and continue to contribute to creating acceptance of all in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising. The Stonewall Uprising was a six-day period during which patrons of the New York City gay bar, Stonewall Inn, that was frequently raided by police, as well as members of the neighborhood fought against police brutality during a time when the LGBTQIA+ community were regularly harassed. This series of events fundamentally changed LGBTQIA+ activism in the United States.
Throughout Pride Month, millions of individuals throughout the world participate in parades, festivals, and celebrations, as well as demonstrations and awareness campaigns to give voice to the issues currently facing the LGBTQIA+ community.
It is important to still recognize Pride Month because while there have been great strides towards inclusivity, there is still work to be done to ensure everyone is safe and supported.
