About Pride Month

Each June, Pride Month is celebrated to honor LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) culture and achievements, and to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. Pride Month celebrates all who have contributed and continue to contribute to creating acceptance of all in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, a six-day period during which patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a New York City gay bar that was frequently raided by police, as well as members of the neighborhood fought against police brutality during a time when the LGBTQIA+ community was regularly harassed. This series of events fundamentally changed LGBTQIA+ activism in the United States.

Throughout Pride Month, millions of individuals throughout the world participate in parades, festivals, and celebrations of life, as well as demonstrations and awareness campaigns to give voice to the issues currently facing the LGBTQIA+ community.

Upcoming Pride Month Celebrations in Massachusetts

A new organization, Boston Pride for the People, is bringing back Pride celebrations to the City of Boston.  Boston Pride for the People encourages empowerment through community, celebration of LGBTQIA+ history, commemoration of LGBTQIA+ activists and associated accomplishments, and education on the impacts of oppression on the LGBTQIA+ community.

In addition to events in Boston, numerous Pride events are planned across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Please visit this calendar to learn more about where and when celebrations are taking place.
