A Message from Michael Durkin, Chief Procurement Officer

Dear Valued Partners,

What term best describes your relationship with UMass? Vendor, Supplier, Contractor, Merchant, Partner—there are many terms for the individuals and companies that do business with UMass, each playing a vital role in powering the teaching, research, and service of the largest public university system in the Commonwealth. With over a billion dollars in non-personal spending, the five UMass campuses and the President’s Office serve as a significant economic engine in Massachusetts and beyond.

As key collaborators in the University of Massachusetts’ mission, your partnership is essential in helping us deliver an affordable world-class education, conduct groundbreaking research, and create lasting social and economic impact. By providing the goods and services that keep our campuses running, you help ensure that UMass can continue transforming lives, driving innovation, and strengthening communities.

"At UMass, we believe in moving beyond transactions to build true partnerships that drive innovation, efficiency, and impact."

- Michael Durkin, Chief Procurement Officer

With more than 30,000 registered entities in UMass' e-procurement system, how do you stand out?

At UMass, we strive to move beyond the traditional "vendor" relationship—we want our suppliers to become true partners. We seek industry leaders who bring value not only through the goods and services they provide but also by offering insights into operational efficiencies and cost-saving opportunities. Like many industries, we face economic and demographic challenges, and collaboration is key to navigating them successfully.

Across UMass, we believe that we are "better together." When our five campuses and the President’s Office work as one, we accomplish more than we ever could individually. The same holds true for our partnerships with the companies and individuals we do business with. When our suppliers become our partners, we create stronger, more innovative, and more efficient solutions together.

Thank you for your partnership and your ongoing commitment to UMass. Together, we are building a brighter future.

With appreciation,

Michael “Mike” Durkin, CPO
