Dr. Luzuriaga is a physician-scientist whose research is devoted to understanding viral and host factors that contribute to the establishment and outcomes of viral infections in children. She uses insights gained from these studies to advance prevention and treatment strategies. Since 2012, she has served as Director of the University of Massachusetts Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UMCCTS) and Principal Investigator of the UMass NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award. As UMass Chan Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Luzuriaga provides strategic, administrative, and financial oversight of the UMass Chan clinical and translational research enterprise.
Dr. Luzuriaga completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in Biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine. After serving a residency in pediatrics at the Floating Hospital for Children, Tufts Medical Center, she completed clinical and research fellowship training in adult and pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Luzuriaga has held multiple leadership roles in NIH initiatives and has served as a consultant to or as an advisory board member of several national and international organizations. She is an elected Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America and the American Academy of Microbiology.
